Manners
Sir,—How we (collectively, not., individually) dislike criticism, • whether it be of our hotels. T.A.8., or what have you. Even our Governor-General has raised the* ire of the Minister of Finance for aiting his views on controls. But to say or think that in Christ- , church our manners or courtesy t are as they should be is just ab- * solute nonsense. We either live 4 in a perpetual cloudless sky or' have our heads buried in sand. t oblivious of what goes on around z us. I am concerned with the * youths one meets—either public school or college. It must be the example set in the home that. 7 makes most of them positively ( boorish. The girls seem much better trained and are courteous. So let us put off this t mantle of complacency and try to . cultivate good manners, if only skin deep.—Yours, etc., GOOD MANNERS. March 13, 1958.
Future Of Wigram Sir,—ln Thursday's issue you ' • suggest that the time has come for the Air Force to vacate Wig- * ram. Few citizens would disagree with you on this point. However, one wonders if your second suggestion, that the area - be used for homes and factories, ' is in the best interests of greater Christchurch. For long enough“ the people of Christchurch have been justly proud of ' Hagley Park. It would seem to me that Wigram could with Advantage be , reserved as a second edition of ’ this famous park, which has not been added to within living memory, although our population* has been growing by leaps and r bounds.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER PARK-SAVER. * March 14, 1958.
