Beckenham Bus

Sir—The plea for the restoration of the Beckenham bus fell on deaf ears. The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board said that a trial had been made through Brougham street some years ago from St. Martins, but it was not a success. That is pure evasion. We have never had a bus through Sydenham from Beckenham. The fact remains that the Beckenham bus was taken ’ off and diverted back into St. Martins, a district already served by ’ two separate bus routes. Not so . long ago a petition signed by nearly 300 people of this district • was handed in to the board ask- . ing for the restoration of the - Beckenham bus, and to run up , Huxley street into Sydenham. Surely this was more sensible ■ than wasting the bus, as is done at present. Why does the general manager ignore the wishes of the , people of this district? We pay _ a substantial sum each year to help meet the board's losses. — Yours, etc., HUXLEY ST.March 1, 1958. [The general manager of the • Christchurch Transport Board . (Mr J. F. Fardell) said that the . petition presented to the board • contained 135 signatures. The de- , cision to combine the Beckenham service with the St. Martins ser- . vice was taken only after full consideration by the board of the * patronage being received, and the < fact that the area was sensed by the Beckenham, St. Martins, and Cashmere routes.]
