R.S.A. POLICY ON DEFENCE
No Change In Views On C.M.T.
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, 14 March.
The Dominion president of the New Zealand Returned Services' Association (Mr K. W. Fraser) said today it was “somewhat optimistic” of the acting-Prime Minister (Mr Skinner) to feel that the R.S.A. deputation yesterday was reassured that the Government’s plans for defence of this country would be adequate to handle all New Zealand’s defence obligations without any disclosure of details. Such a disclosure Mr Skinner was not yet able to give, added Mr Fraser.
“The R.S.A. looks forward to an early announcement of the Government’s plans, when they will be carefully considered on their merits,” said Mr Fraser. “However, it is not to be inferred from the acting-Prime Minister’s statement that the R.S.A. has departed in any degree from its views that compulsory military training must be retained.
“This is a matter of firm policy and up to the present no adequate reason has been given for any change.’’
