Life Saving INTERPROVINCIAL TEST WON BY WELLINGTON

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, March 10. Superiority in the reel events gave Wellington a big lead over Canterbury in the first interprovincial surf life saving test in New Zealand surf history. The contest, which covered all phases of life saving work, was held at Lyall Bay between teams in which seniors and juniors were equally represented. The Canterbury men proved generally faster in the water than the Wellington representatives but the margin was not as great as expected in the generally calm conditions prevailing. In the senior six-man rescue and resuscitation event, D. Graham and R. Henry who drew the water positions for Canterbury built up a clear lead from the Wellington men, J. Craig and R. Maltby. Facing a deficit of 2.7 points in the water, the Wellington team drilled with precision to more than make up the difference. The four-man event saw the New Zealand representative M. Haxton beat the Canterbury beltman to the buoy. The other members of the team made sure this slight lead was considerably extended.

In the two junior teams events, p the Canterbury boys, though 2 strong in the water, did not have that extra finish in hand work { which could have gained the ver- ( diet. } In the senior surf race, M. Hax- ] ton led the field home hotly followed by a group of Canterbury men. In the junior race, A. McPhail (Canterbury) who won the junior national title at South Brighton recently was chased all the way by B. Crowder (Wellington). After winning the four reel events Wellington led by a wide margin. Canterbury gradually made up ground but when the contest ended Wellington still headed : Canterbury by 33 points to 30.
