SOFTBALL

Christchurch Beaten By Richmond

The Christchurch senior men’s softball team, this season’s winner of the grade championship, was trounced by the second place team, Richmond, when the senior knockout championships were resumed at English Park. Both teams received no handicap points. They played good softball, but Richmond was the more consistent in batting and fielding. Richmond opened the scoring in its first innings after dismissing Christchurch three up-three down in its initial bat. With Christchurch again scoreless In . the second innings, Richmond scored three runs with some strong hitting through the in-field to take a 4-0 lead. Christchurch gained a rim on a passed ball in its third innings, and fielding better, held Richmond three up-three down in its third innings. Christchurch appeared likely to make runs in its fourth innings, loading the bases with one away, but a brilliant double play between third base and first base ended its innings without score. Richmond scored one run at its bat, and then with more clever fielding held Christchurch scoreless once more.

Richmond’s sixth innings was again notable for the near homer hit by J. McLeod and the number of passed balls that also brought runs. Christchurch batted its final innings with an eight run leeway, and although starting off with a run made on a sacrifice bunt by J. Gibson, the side failed, and Richmond won the game 9-2 without batting in its final innings. PAPANUI—LINWOOD Papanui, which will meet Richmond in the final next Saturday, had an easy 20-7 win over Linwood, in a game marked by consistent scoring by Papanui, notwithstanding changes in Linwood’s pitching lineup and the absence of fielding errors. Linwood failed in its first innings in spite of clever bunting, and the first run of the game was made by Papanui at its bat. Linwood’s second innings ended scoreless on a double play, and Papanui. taking advantage of an overthrow, added to its total. Linwood bunted successfully in the third innings and scored, but Papanui replied with five more runs to take a 13-2 lead. Linwood scored again in their fourth, as did Papanui, and after scoreless innings by both teams Linwood scored in its final innings, but lost the game.
