CURRENT NOTES

A well-attended meeting of the literary circle, of the Canterbury Women’s Club was held recently. Mrs H. P. Wise, the leader, welcomed the guests and nine new members. Mrs Nancy Sherris sang a bracket of Scottish songs and Mrs T. G. Campbell, the guest speaker, gave a talk on Robert Burns.

Miss B. Collie has been appointed cataloguer at the Canterbury Public Library. Miss Collie is a member of the library’s staff, and will succeed Miss A. Jameson, who resigned recently to join the University of Canterbury Library.

The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Christchurch High School Old Girls’ Association: president, Miss I. F. Milnes; vice-presidents, Miss A. M. Burns, Mrs J. S. Hildyard and Mrs R. S. Owen; secretary, Mrs W. A. Staff; assistant secretary, Mrs O. D. Michel; community services secretary, Mrs R. E. Edwards; dance convener, Miss O. L. Eslick; trustees, Mrs R. S. Owen and Miss R. F. C. Tyndall; committee, Mrs L. Cox, Misses M. Kissel, G. Cropp, J. Collins and L. Cusdin.

The March meeting of the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild was also its annual meeting. Mrs F. Milne presided and welcomed Mrs Plumridge. Dominion president, and about 170 members. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs F. Milne; secretary, Mrs A. R. Milligan; treasurer, Mrs J. Vivian; committee, Mesdames M. Beer, D. Cameron, J. Fielding, V. Fuller, P. Goldsmith, B. Henderson, A. McGarva, H. McFadden, A. Morrow and N. Taylor. Circle leaders: Arts and crafts, Mrs Roxborough; civic, Miss Cone; drama, Mrs Jones; garden, Mrs Hobbs; singing, Mrs Thompson. The 47th annual meeting of the St. James’ Mothers’ Union was held recently in the Church Hall after a service in the church conducted by the Vicar (the Rev F. Allen). The following officers were elected: enrolling member, Mrs W. Dunn; vice-presidents, Mesdames Allen and Templeton; ecretary, Mrs L. Parker; treasurer, Mrs E. Brown; sick visitors, Mesdames Cocks and Rickmpn; committee, Mesdames Pavitt, Trethowen, Evans, Armiger, Bentley and Willis.

Mrs W. Thacker presided at the monthly meeting of the women’s auxiliary committee of the Navy League. The treasurer reported that £6O 10s 4d was raised at the cake and produce stall held in Cathedral Square. Two new committee members, Mrs B. Johns (Belfast) and Mrs N. Christie were welcomed. Congratulations were extended to Miss Mary Morten who was awarded the M.B.E. in the New Year’s Honours List.

Miss Judith Ferrier spoke to members of the Home Economics Association needlecraft circle on interior decoration. The talk was illustrated with diagrams and pictures. Contemporary furnishing fabrics were also displayed. Miss Wardle thanked the speaker. The circle agreed to join in sponsoring an Italian girl, aged seven, who is a victim of poliomyelitis.

The February meeting of the Overseas League garden circle held recently wsTs presided over by Mrs J. Carr. Mrs H. J. Quarrel] gave a talk on the cultivation of dahlias. Mrs C. E. Trippner thanked the speaker.

Mrs W. Harvey presided at the March meeting of the St. Albans League of Mothers. A successful bring and buy was held. Recitations were given by Mrs E. J. Money. The speaker was Mrs R. W. Wornall, who spoke on C.0.R.5.0.
