REMOVAL OF HOARDINGS
City Council Policy
A policy for the removal of hoardings and advertising signs from Christchurch was adopted by the City Council last evening on the recommendation of a special committee. It was set up to consider a policy after Cr. W. L. F. Utley moved last year that no extension of advertising hoardings be permitted and that as existing licences expired they be reviewed with a view to their elimination. The committee recommended that no hoardings or advertising panels be permitted in residential areas, on non-conforming buildings in residential areas, or in areas in residential districts “spotzoned” for other purposes.
All existing licences should be reviewed at their expiry date, with a view to eliminating all signs on structures built specially for advertising, “unless under special circumstances,” the committee continued.
All signs on buildings advertising goods not sold within in the course of normal trade should be eliminated, it recommended.
Representations should be made to the Ministers in charge of the Government departments concerned to have hoardings on Crown lands removed over a period.
In adopting the recommendations, the council agreed that before it took any action interested parties would be advised of its intentions.
