RACING LLANISFAIR BEST STAYER

Autumn Handicap At Trentham

Llanisfair, a widely-campaigned Count Rendered gelding, clearly outstayed the others in the £5OOO Autumn Handicap at Trentham on Saturday..

He had placed form in five earlier attempts to master two miles—he was an unlucky second to Merry Legs in this race two years earlier—and was one of the form horses after winning the Franklin Cup, for which he was penalised 71b, a week earlier. Llanisfair, a six-year-old owned by Messrs R. B. Seabrook and C. B. Wake, dashed clear from a trailing position well outside the furlong and after that none of the others could keep him within challenging distance.

His time, 3.19, equalled the Australian and New Zealand record for two miles established by Yeman when he won the Wellington Cup in January, and was half a second faster than the previous best for the race, run by Lancaster in 1954. The former Australian jockey, W. A. Smith, rode Llanisfair fairly close to the lead all the way. Colchis was the leader, and Llanisfair was the only one to pass him. .Colchis beat Yeman by a length and a quarter for second. Highlander was fourth close behind Yeman, and it was a meritorious placing because he was checked when Oracle and Calcutta Sweep fell six furlongs out. Llanisfair, a member of R. T. Cotter’s team at Te Rapa, carried 26,251| 10s tickets in a doubles pool of £119,964 10s Yeman was the favourite with 59,181 tickets. Savage Wins Second Leg Savage rounded off the day’s double by winning the Thompson Handicap for Sir Thomas Duncan. Savage, a brown gelding by Ruthless from Happy Climax, was the 2,3 favourite and beat Salaam, another well-supported lightweight, by a head. The Riccar-ton-trained Cheyenne, the win favourite, was a close and an unlucky third. Savage and Salaam were two of three three-year-olds in the field of 21. Holders of 3590 5s tickets on the Llanisfair—Savage combination received £llO 9s for £l. Savage is trained at Awapuni by E. Temperton, and was ridden by the leading jockey, W. D. Skelton. Earlier in the day Skelton won the North Island Challenge Stakes on sprinter Cardinal King. It was a notable double for the Oamaru horseman, whose success at Trentham this season has been outstanding. Cardinal King was favourite for the North Island Challenge Stakes, and he was not put to the test. It was his seventh win this season for Mrs V. A. Cook and Mr G. Paterson.

outside the last furlong, and beat the Takanini sprinter soundly by a length and a half. Melanion beat the others—lmitation was the best of them—just as decisively. Cardinal King did not begin as quickly as most of the others, and Pinnace and Monogram were also slow to move.

Melanion led out, but Cardinal King ran the first furlong very quickly to join him. They led to the half-mile from Royal Crescent, Blonde Sprite, and Imitation, which were in line clear of Lorica, Pinnace, and Monogram. They came to the straight in that order, but Cardinal King inched his way into a clear lead when they straightened up, and had the race in hand a furlong out. The consistent Imitation just lasted for third from Monogram, a stronger finisher. Then there was a length to Royal J Crescent and half a length to Lorica. (

The Riccarton two-year-olds, Pinnace and Blonde Sprite, dropped out in the straight and tailed the field. Results:— • NGAIO HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £BOO. One mile and three furlongs. 6. 3—l. Cardinal King was one of two winners from the South Island. The other was the Riccartontrained Braganza, .which was much too good for the other two-year-olds in the Plunket Nursery Handicap. Braganza is trained by J. C. Tomkinson for Mr A. N. Smith, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club. - The track was firm and fast. The on-course totalisator turnover was £174,812, including £20,370 on the double. It was £5424 10s below the figure for the first day of the club’s autumn meeting last year. Won Unchallenged

Llanisfair followed Colchis and Man o’ Mars into the straight in the Autumn Handicap, went two lengths clear outside the furlong, and won unchallenged. Colchis was clear of the favourite, Yeman, which beat Highlander by half a length for third. Colchis and King’s Crest led down the chute to the course property,'and Man o’ Mars was close behind just ahead of Llanisfair and Oracle. Llanisfair was in the third line leaving the straight. Teaka was close behind, but three wide, and Yeman was in the next line, also three wide. The pace, brisk in the rush for positions, had slackened. Oracle fell at the six furlongs and brought down Calcutta Sweep, and some of the positions altered after that mix-up. Colchis led into the last half-mile by a • length from King’s Crest and Man o’ Mars. Next in line were Ho Choy, Llanisfair, and Teaka, and Dalrob and Revolver were clos§ at hand ahead of Yeman, Highlander, and Stylish Milling. Llanisfair closed Colchis’s lead early in the run home, and reached the front outside the furlong. It was all over then.

Yeman tried hard to get within challenging range, but, like many of the others, he felt the pace and did no more than hold his position at the end. He was all out to beat Highlander for third. Money-Go-Round was fifth in a gap, but came from near the tail of the field. She shaded Revolver, and was clear of Man o’ Mars, Teaka, Ho Choy, Finito, Dalrob, Stylish Milling, King’s Crest, Neptune’s Pride, and Canon. Canon was checked when Oracle and Calcutta Sweep came down. Dogged Challenge Savage challenged doggedly from a trailing position and mastered the brilliant Takanini three-year-old, Salaam, close to home in the Thompson Handicap, the second leg of the double. There was only a head between them, and only a neck then to the Riccarton-trained Cheyenne, one of the unlucky runners. Supporters of the place favourite. Summer Glow, had their hopes dashed at the start. She lost three lengths. Warwick was also slow from his stall, and India, Resemblance, and Gay Jinx drifted inside the first furlong. Salaam was quick to mount speed. 17 wide, and was soon running alongside Nicotian in the lead. Summersette. Solepic, and Savage were close behind. Cheyenne was also close at hand there, but drifted a few places going to the half-mile. Sarcelle also going back. Nicotian and Salaam held their lead round to the straight, where Solepic and Savage were close behind. Cheyenne, disappointed for a run earlier on the inner, had found a small gap and was making ground alongside Summersette and Privy Co’mcil n« co tian dropped out beaten outside the furlong where and Savage we-e challenging Salanrn. Cheyenne gave chase on the inner but it was le*t to Savage and Salaam to battle- it out in the last few strides Savage got there by inches Cheyenne, a very creditable third, was a short length ahead of Solepic. Then there was a long neck to the fa s+-finishing India. Privy Council, fifth a furlong out, finished sixth, and next were Summersette, Resemblance, Royal Zorra, Gay Jinx, Warwick, Sarcelle. Pinnacle Ridge, Happy Warrior, Gundar Haegg, Clinker, Nicotian, Summer Glow. Genre, and Let’s'Go. Cardinal King’s Win Cardinal King joined Mel anion in the lead after a furlong in the North Challenge Stakes, ran clear
