“INACCURACIES IN REPORT”

Statement By Mr Lyall “I am reported in ‘The Press’ on Saturday as having stated that the leading article in the latest issue of the ‘Plumbers’ Journal’ is a ‘shocking piece of nonsense, written by someone who knows nothing whatsoever.’ I said no such thing,” said Mr D. W. Lyall, principal of the Christchurch Technical College, yesterday.

“I described the article as a shocking piece of journalism. I said many other things about it as well; but the word ‘nonsense’ was not used, nor would I dream of saying that the article was ‘written by someone who knows nothing whatsoever’,” Mr Lyall said.

“On the contrary, the present editor of the ‘Plumbers* Journal’ is a man whose principles I have often admired and whe is. naturally, widely informed on plumbing matters generally. That I believe the article in question to be ‘ill-considered and illinformed’ neither means nor implies that I regard him as one who ‘knows nothing whatsoever.' Your reporter erred in using quotation marks for this section of his report,” Mr Lyall said.

“There are other factual inaccuracies in your report, but they matter much less than the one mentioned above, except perhaps to those interested in probing the cause or causes of the low Dominion pass percentage in the Plumbers’ Board examination. Anyone interested may have a copy of my own report to my board on request,” said Mr Lyall.
