RACING Tulloch Easily Wins St. Leger Stakes

MELBOURNE, March 9. The New Zealand-bred Tulloch cantered home for an easy win in the £3500 St. Leger Stakes at Flemington yesterday. Sailor's Guide was beaten into third place in the £2OOO Queen's Plate. Winner of the Queen’s Plate by half a length was the former dual derby winner, the New Zealandbred and owned Monte Carlo, with Prince Delville second. Monte Carlo, which finished fifth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes to Sailor’s Guide last Saturday, was perfectly ridden by A. Ward yesterday. Tulloch and Nilento paid a record low totalisator double of 7s for 5s on the St. Leger Stakes and Ascot Vale Stakes.

Both horses started at odds-on. Tulloch started 11/2 on and paid 5s 6d on the win totalisator, and Nilento started at 5/2 on and paid 7s. The Victorian jockey, W. Williamson, riding the 11/2 on favourite. Sailor’s Guide, was jeered by betters on his return to the scale.

Sailor’s Guide went for the leader. Lindbergh, two furlongs from home, but two New Zealand horses, Monte Carlo and Ray Ribbon, flashed up alongside. Williamson used the whip, but Monte Carlo was too strong in the run for the line and held off Prince Delville, which finished second, with Sailor’s Guide third. Ray Ribbon finished fourth, and Field Chief sixth. 1 Monte Carlo will return to Sydney tonight. His trainer, Frank Dalton, said Monte Carlo’s main mission would be the Randwick Queen Elizabeth Stakes to be run at the Sydney Cup meeting at Easter. Tulloch’s Win Tulloch had little more than a working gallop when he won the £3500 St. Leger Stakes. His chief competitor. Prince Darius, was scratched on veterinary advice. Prince Darius suffered a stomach complaint on the morning of the race, and the Victorian Racing Club’s veterinary surgeons gave permission for h<s scratching. Tulloch, at 11-2 on, beat Tuki by 12 lengths with the New Zealandbred Wool Man 20 lengths away third.

G. Moore had to restrain Tulloch at the start of the race until they approached the turn into the straight where the colt was given more reign and bounded into the lead.

After the race, the trainer, 'T. J. Smith, said he was satisfied Tulloch was back to his best. form.
