Hazlett Gold Cup Won By Ark Royal

. ‘ "The P.ress" Special Service DUNEDIN, March 9. Ark Royal showed a return of his best three-year-old form when he fought back gamely to hold oil the fast-finishing Riccarton challenger, Watch and Wait, in the Janies Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui yesterday.

This event was the feature event on the last day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s cup meeting held in fine weather before a good attendance. Ark Royal shared the pace with Mighty Dollar but had worked clear at the furlong. He appeared to have the situation well in hand, but B. J. Anderton had to ride him right out to hold off Watch and Wait and win by half a head. In running out the mile weight-for-age event in Imin 38sec Ark Royal established a new race record. The first leg of the off-course double, the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, was won by the Wash-dyke-trained Desert Cloud in a blanket finish for all the placings.

The pacemakers, Cashmere and Smart, and Cornflake were fighting out a desperate finish when Desert Cloud came from the rear to snatch the decision on thd post. Half heads separated the first four horses.

Desert Cloud carried 4389 J 10s tickets in a total double pool of £19,342 ss, and 402 of these were re-invested on Salonica, winner of the Flying Handicap. The dividend for £1 was £79 10s.

The on-course turnover was £45,946, compared with £45,935 10s last year, an increase of £lO 10s. The total for the meeting was £93,327 10s, compared with £90,550 10s, an increase of £2777. An inquiry was held into the running of Shoal in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. C. McDonald, her rider, said that the saddle slipped slightly but he did not think this affected her chance. Shoal was unable to hit out on the hard going. She had suffered a bruised heel during the week. R. J. Skelton, rider of Minglow, was fined £2 for attempting to ride in a two-year-old race with spurs. Hazlett Gold Cup The win favourite, Ark Royal, worked clear from the furlong to win the James Hazlett Gold Cup, but he had to establish a new race record to hold off the late challenge of the Riccarton contender, Watch and Wait, which failed by half a head. The field got away to a good start, but Watch and Wait was last at the end of a furlong. Silver King made the early running from Ark Royal and Mighty Dollar, clear of Winning Wave and King’s Lace. Mighty Dollar joined Ark Royal in the lead running to the fivefurlong post, where Silver King and Winning Wave were trailing ahead of King’s Lace and Master David, then Watch and Wait.

The order was the same into the straight, but at the furlong Ark Royal shaded Mighty Dollar, with Silver King and King’s Lace next and Watch and Wait showing up wide out.

In a good finish Ark Royal just lasted to beat Watch and Wait. There was half a length to Silver King and three lengths to King’s Lace. Mighty Dollar weakened to fifth a similar distance back, clear of Master David and Winning Wave.

Desert Cloud Wins In a thrilling finish to the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap Desert Cloud came home with a strong run to win by half a head from Cashmere. There were similar margins to Smart and Cornflake, then three-quarters of a length to Blue Count. Coinalot lost five lengths at the start. Smart, Cashmere, Cornflake, Gay Mood, and Well Cut were the first to show out. Cashmere was in front at the mile, with Smart close up, ahead of Gay Mood, Well Cut, and Cornflake racing in line, then Demolish, Landon, Rathkeale, Good Abbot, Black Star, and Blue Count. Smart joined Cashmere- in the lead at the five furlongs, with Landon, Cornflake, Well Cut, Gay Mood, and Demolish handy. The order was unchanged into the straight, and at the furlong Cashmere and Smart just shaded Cornflake ahead of Demolish, Treasure Pond, Landon, and Gay Mood. Desert Cloud was coming fast on the inner and got up to win in the last stride. Cashmere, Smart, hnd Cornflake were almost in line, with Blue Count a’ fast finishing fifth, then Black Star, Rathkeale, and Royal Halyard next.

Salonica Wins Sprint Salonica, which was having his second start in open company, came away over the last furlong of the Flying Handicap to beat the pacemaker, My Fritend, by three lengths. The well-supported Darby lost his chance at the start. He was leaning on the back strap when the barrier was released. My Friend led out from Salonica, Persia, and Montrose. The surprise favourite, Palace, gradually drifted to the rear and was one of the last to finish. Montrose followed My Friend into the straight, with Salonica, Persia, Seadune, and Gattiva handiest of the rest. Salonica ran to the front at the furlong and came right away. My Friend beat Montrose by a head for second, with a length and a half to Kinsimm, which was chopped back at the start, but came home well for his placing. There was three-quar-ters of a length to the fast-finishing Darby, a head to Persia, and two lengths to Seadune at the head of the others. Results:— < OWHIRO HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £325.
