SHIPPING IN PACIFIC

New Company’s Intentions

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) TORONTO, March 7.

Nine ships owned by the recently formed Orient and Pacific Lines are due to go into operation by 1961, linking the West Coast of Canada and the United States with the Orient, Australia and New Zealand.

The first of the ships, the Himalaya, is to sail from Vancouver next month.

Mr Malcolm Millar, general manager of the Peninsular and Orient Shipping Company, said yesterday that two routes were planned'as a joint operation between the P. and O. line and its subsidiary, the Orient Line. He said it was aimed to have monthly Sailings on each route. In the South Pacific, P. and O. would integrate its service with existing Orient Line routes between North America, Australia and New Zealand. Ports of call would include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Yokohama, Manila, Hong Kong, Auckland and Sydney. The Orient and Pacific lines will use seven Orient Line ships already in service in the Pacific. Two new turbo-electric ships are planned, making up the fleet to nine by 1961.
