CRUISING’S EASY WIN IN CUP AT GREYMOUTH

“The Press” Special Service

GREYMOUTH, March 9. The double dividend of £7O 8s returned by Crqising, winner of the Greymouth Cup, and Winkles, winner of the Paroa Hack Handicap, bn the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Omoto yesterday was the highest on the West Cpast for some time. The feature of the racing, which took place in very hot weather and on a fast track, was the race record time of Imin 39 3-ssec recorded by Cruising in the Greymouth Cup. Times in most other events were very good for this track. The meeting was well patronised, but totalisator returns were down. On-course investments amounted to £12,575, including £1599 10s on the double, compared/with £13,217 last year. / The top-weight, Tonka, tried to gain an all-way win in the Greymouth Cup, and he set a strong pace. Appreciate and Curtain Raiser followed Tonka about two lengths behind and caught him rounding the home bend, ’ where Curtain Raiser began to feel the lack of. racing. Appreciate could make no impression. A furlong from home Tonka appeared likely to win, but Cruising came with a strong run and won going away by two lengths. Happy battled on better than the other light-weights to take fourth place. Second Leg Winkles led all the way in the Paroa Hack Handicap. He and his stablemate, Salmiranda, opened up a gap on Hurry Along after three furlongs. Going down the back, Winkles increased his advantage to three lengths, and he carried on for an effortless win. The warm favourite, Jack Ashore, was not likely after a slow beginning. Uproar, another which missed the jump, did well to finish fourth.
