RESULTS OF FOOTBALL IN BRITAIN

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright)

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 8. West Bromwich Albion avenged its mid-week cup defeat by scoring four goals against Manchester United in the English Football League today. It was Manchester United’s first defeat in five games since last month’s Munich air crash, but the score was by no means a true reflection of the play.

Manchester United lost its insideforward, Ernie Taylor, with a leg injury half-way through the first half. Taylor returned after treatment, but was oft the field for most of the second half.

Before the game, the crowd of more than 60.000 heard a tape-re-corded message from the Manchester United manager. Mr Matt Busby, who is in hospital in Munich, relayed over loudspeakers. Members of the Munich hospital staff were guests at the game, and received a tremendous ovation.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, knocked out of the cup last week, took some time to settle down against Newcastle United, but goals in the second half by Peter Broadbent, Norman Deeley, and Bob Mason gave them a 3-1 victory. Len White scored for Newcastle. Wolverhamton Wanderers have now regained their five-point lead in the championship. Their nearest challengers, Preston North End, lost 4-2 against Everton in Liverpool. A spectator ran on to the pitch during the first half and struck Harry Mattison, the Preston centre-half, in the face. Two other Preston players held the man until police arrived. Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, both seriously threatened with relegation to the second division, drew 3-3 at Sunderland. In the big London match between Arsenal and Chelsea, centre-forward David Herd scored a hat-trick to help Arsenal win, 5-4. West Ham United took a clear lead in the second division, as a result of its easy 8-0 win over Rotherham. Charlton Athletic, which previously was level on points with West Ham, was soundly beaten, 3-1, by Fulham, which will be ■ Manchester United’s opponents in the cup semifinals.
