BOILERMAKERS AT MERCER Ruling On Pay Rates
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 9.
Boilermakers employed on work in the coal-handling excavation at the Mercer coal power station project will receive an extra Is 3Jd an hour, the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr H. M. Hopper) has ruled.
The extra payment is the same amount as that finally offered by the contractors during a disputes committee hearing. The workers’ representatives asked for payment of time and a half rates (2s Hid and hour extra) and finally said they would accept Is 6d an hour.
The dispute led to a strike of boilermakers, 35 of whom were issued with summonses for taking part in an alleged illegal strike. The cases were set down for hearing last week, but were adjourned indefinitely.
