Zatopek’s Retirement

Czechoslovakia’s star runner, Emil Zatopek, has officially retired from all competitive sport after 17 years of successes on the track, it was announced today. Zatopek, aged 35, is a lieutenantcolonel in the Czechoslovak Army. His greatest year was 1952, when he became a triple Olympic champion, winning the 5000 and 10,000 metres and the marathon all In one week at Helsinki.
He followed this by setting world records for 15 miles, 25,000 and 30.000 metres in the same year.
