Farmer Crushed In Railway Yard

An Ashburton farmer suffered serious injuries when he was crushed between his sheep lorry and a railway sheep waggon while unloading sh6ep from the waggon at the Ashburton railway yards about 4.45 p.m. yesterday. He is George Walter Ward, aged 30, married, of Newlands, Ashburton. Mr Ward was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital suffering from fractured ribs and suspected internal injuries. Late last evening he was on the seriously ill list. The accident occurred when Mr Ward was climbing into the sliding door of the sheep waggon from the deck of his lorry, which was’ backed hard up at right angles to the sheep waggon. A rake of other waggons on the same line, which were rolling during shunting operations, ran into other stationary trucks, including the waggon Mr Ward was about to enter, and the impact caused him to lose his balance and be crushed between the sheep waggon and his lorry.
