Papanui High At Greymouth
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 7.
Papanui High School first XI beat Greymouth Technical High School’s team by 18 runs in a game played at Greymouth. Papanui also won the girls’ softball by 14 runs to 12, but Greymouth won the girls’ tennis by 6 matches to 4.
Papanui batted first in the cricket match and scored 180 (R. Hopkins 77, G. Barron 23. R. Elder 22 not out, K. Smith 20). B. Devlin, three for 39, was Greymouth’s most successfuf bowler. Greymouth replied with 162 (G. Harper 87, Devlin 38). Barron, three for 40, took most wickets for the visitors. A feature of the softball match was the scoring of home runs by P. Rowley (Greymouth) and R. Silk (Papanui). Papanui led for the first three innings and then Greymouth led 10-8 with two innings to go. Papanui, however, added four runs to Greymouth’s two to gain victory in a very close match.
Following were the results in the girls’ tennis match, Greymouth players being named first:— Singles.—E. Ogilvie beat K. Reece, 9-4; E. Ogilvie beat B. Barker, 9-3; J. Richardson lost to K. Reece, 2-9; J. Richardson lost to B. Barker, 2-9; I. Wicks lost to K. Phelan, 2-9; L. Wicks lost to D. Class, 1-9; P. Moffitt beat K. Phelan, 9-2; P. Moffitt beat D. Glass, 9-3.
Doubles.—E. Ogilvie and J. Richardson beat K. Reece and B. Barker, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3; L. Wicks and P. Moffitt beat K. Phelan and D. Glass, 6-4, 6-2.
