CYCLING Canterbury Juniors Ride Well In N.Z. Championship

(From Out Own Reporter)

PALMERSTON N., March 7. The Canterbury competitors had mixed success at the New Zealand amateur cycling championships held in Palmerston North tonight. Conditions were cold and windy. Although one of the Canterbury competitors, G. Hill, won his first round of the 500-metre senior sprints, J. Beere and N. Fisher, beaten in the same round, came back to the second round by winning their repechage heats. In this round Hill had little difficulty in beating K. Bowater (West Coast, North Island) but Fisher was beaten by T. Wyman (Auckland) and Beere was put out by B. Kitchen (West Coast, North Island). Hill is now the only Canterbury rider left in the senior sprints. The elimination of K. Wilbraham (Auckland) was the biggest suprise in the senior sprints. Wilbraham, last year’s junior champion, was put out in two sprints —Fisher beating him in the second.

T. Kenny (Canterbury) trounced G. Hammond (Wellington) in the second round of the junior sprints and another Canterbury competitor, B. Hazeldine, had a very easy win over B. Hardy (OtagoSouthland). The other two Canterbury men, M. Parker and T. Weir, were eliminated.

Hazeldine and Kenny, on their performances of the last two nights, have a good chance of being the finalists. Canterbury fared badly in the 4000-metre individual pursuit when its representatives R. Fowler and D. Brettell only filled fifth and seventh places in the qualifying round run against time W. Dalton (Auckland), the present champion, covered the distance in smin 12.1 sec, his nearest rival being A. Larkins (Otago-South-land), who was 12.1 sec slower. The Wellington team in the 4000-metre teams pursuit rode brilliantly to record the fastest time. smin ll.lsec. Auckland was second. Canterbury third and Otago-Southland fourth. These teams will contest the semi-finals. Results were:—
