Sportsman’s Notebook Demonstrations Of Water Ski-ing At Lake Bryndwr

A public demonstration of water ski-ing, a sport which has gained many followers in Christchurch recently, will be held at Lake Bryndwr tomorrow afternoon. Organised by the Lake Bryndwr Water Ski Club, which was formed only last year, the demonstrations will feature speed and trick events. With speedboats towing the skiers at up to 30 miles-an-hour .and men and women performing novelty events, the club hopes to create more public interest in the sport. Clubs are already flourishing in Dunedin and Picton, and a regatta between the clubs was held at Picton several weeks ago. With larger memberships and competitors, clubs are hopeful that regular contests can be organised. The judging of water ski-ing is very similar to the system employed in ski-ing. A slalom course is set oh the water with the aid of buoys, and points are awarded for style and poise, single ski-ing and tricks. This is the first time a water ski-ing display has been presented by the club. In the future the club hopes to organise carnivals in waters less-restricted than those at Lake Bryndwr. * * * Women Surfers Two outstanding women’s surf teams in Canterbury, Taylor’s Mistake and South Brighton, are determined that a. whole season of hard training in the surf is not going to be wasted. When all the women’s surf events were cancelled at the national surf championships at South Brighton recently because of heavy seas, women surfers from clubs throughout New Zealand made arrangements to hold an unofficial

women’s surf carnival. Arrangements were completed earlier this week and a carnival will be held at Lyall Bay, Wellington, on Saturday. Scorching Bay Ladies, Wellington, and Wellington Ladies will be the other teams competing. There will be a rescue and resucitation competition for' teams of six, and four-member rescue and resucitation competition among the four teams. There will also be a surf race. In the evening a swimming carnival will be held at the Riddiford pool, Lower Hutt. The Canterbury teams have been invited to enter a relay team. * * * Golf Titles Although the field for the Canterbury amateur stroke play championships tomorrow will be smaller than was expected, it will not be lacking in quality. Several of Canterbury’s leading golfers, including M. W. Stanley, C. W. Caldwell, D. J. Ramsay, R. E. Clements, B. L. Clegg, L. J. James and K. D. Foxton will be playing. Seventy-two players will take part in the senior, intermediate and junior sections of the championships which will now be held on only one course each of the two days. The event will be held on the Kaiapoi links on Saturday, and the second day’s play will be held at Rangiora. This is the first time the championships have been held. Waikari Sports Several of Canterbury’s leading athletes will probably compete in the annual Waikari sports meeting which will be held on March 29. Entries, include Misses Valerie Sloper, Marise Chamberlain, and Brian Curie, P. Wells and L. Jones in the track and field events. Concrete throwing circles have been provided and it is understood that Miss Sloper will attempt to better her New Zealand records in the women’s shot put and discus. Large fields are also expected for the cycling events. *• . * * * Badminton Losses Three Christchurch senior grade badminton players will this year take part in the Wellington competitions. They are Chiam See Tong and Misses C. Swift and B. Nelson. Miss Swift was a member of the Canterbury representative team last season, after playing her way through the grades with the University club. Canterbury badminton will be much weaker without her. Chia'ln and Miss Nelson played for the University No. 2 team m the competitions, and both have represented New Zealand Universities. Chiam was the first male player to be awarded a New Zealand University blue for badminton., * « Yacht Shells The Flying Dutchman yacht shells, which will form the basis of the Olympic two-man class m Auckland, have been granted import licences and are now available for Auckland yachtsmen. Formerly, the six shells and a completed hull, which had been imported from Holland and England, had been held in bond pending a Customs clearance. As there are so many yachtsmen interested in obtaining one of the first shipment of shells, a meeting was called last evening to allot the yachts. The meeting was called by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, the national sponsors of the class. * * * Bowling Cancelled Several Christchurch bowling clubs have had their programmes cramped by recent adverse weather and this has caused the St. Albans club to canc-1 its open tournament which was to be held on Saturday. The club still has many important matches to play so it has deleted the open tournament from its programme.
