Expansion Of Tile Industry

This roofing tile industry received its greatest boost during the war years, and in the years ot shortages immediately afterwards when roofing iron from overseas sources was virtually unprocurable. Local tile-making firms stepped up production to fill the breach to such good effect that the housing programme

never lagged because roofing was unprocurable.

Production figures over the years since before the war tell the story of this expansion. In 1938 the industry produced 4,500,000 concrete tiles. By 1946, when house building was again beginning to gather momentum after the war-time disruption, 8,000,000 were turned out.

By 1954 this figure had grown to 13,600,000, and in spite of the increasing availability of iron and other forms of locally manufactured and imported roofing the industry confidently looks forward to a future of still greater expansion.
