REFRIGERATION IN HOMES

Luxury Becomes Standard Refrigeration, once a luxury, has become a standard feature of modern homes. More and more home-builders choose a refrigerator before other household utilities. The principal purpose of refrigeration is to delay the natural process of deterioration or decay, which is nature’s method of returning all forms of plant and animal life to the soil. Food spoilage is also caused by micro-organisms, living bacteria which must eat to live; they attack food from the outside. Microorganisms grow and multiply rapidly, cause food decay and physical changes, leading to food poisoning. Since both enzymic and bacteria actions are responsible for practically all food spoilage, any method of preservation must be to stop or retard this action. Refrigeration of perishable foods is given partial credit by medical authorities for improved health and longer life. The prevalence of ptomaine poisoning and tainted or partially spoiled foods has been greatly reduced.
