NEW BUILDING! AT PORT
Provision For Extra Floors
The new office building in Norwich quay. Lyttelton, to be built for tenants by the Lyttelton Harbour Board will now be of three storeys, instead of the two originally planned, and the foundations will be made sufficient to carry additional floors.
The works committee recommended to the board yesterday that the architects should be instructed to prepare fresh plans incorporating a new floor. Tenants would be advised that an economic rental would be charged, the committee said. Tenders would be invited for the purchase for removal of the building now on the land. There were tenants other than the Union Steam Ship Company and the Customs Department, for which the building was being erected, who would be wanting accommodation at the port, said Mr E. C. Bathurst. It would be economic for the board to have a bigger building.
He could visualise that when the tunnel road was opened, Norwich quay would be a traffic bottleneck, said Mr W. B. Laing. It could be that in 20 years or less buildings on the south side would have to be demolished to make more roadway. The new building could then be very useful.
When Mr J. Brand said there should not be a third floor unless tenants were assured, because the board should not have money tied up, the chairman (Mr W. P. Glue) said there had already been inquiries for space. There would be no difficulty in filling the building. In planning foundations for additional floors, the architects were instructed to consider the building height requirements of the Lyttelton Borough Council.
