NO APPEARANCE IN COURT
Bailed Man On Way To Australia
A man who was due to appear in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court at 10 a.m. yesterday was at that time half an hour out from Whenuapai airport on his way to Australia.
The man, Lionel Edgar Dean, had been arrested in Wellington on Monday, on a warrant issued in Christchurch, last week for arrest on a charge of failing to maintain his wife. When arrested he was on the Monowai, which was about to sail for Australia.
Dean appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in Wellington on Tuesday, and was remanded to appear in Christchurch at 10 a.m. yesterday. He was admitted to bail of £lOO, with a surety of £lOO.
Dean was expected to appear before Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., but when he failed to arrive Mr R. J. de Goldi, appearing for Mrs Dean, asked for the warrant to oe renewed for failure of maintenance, and for another warrant, for attempting to leave New Zealand without providing maintenance, to be issued. Mr R. W. Edgley appeared on behalf of a firm of Wellington solicitors representing Dean. The warrants were issued by the Magistrate, who would not make any decision as to bail until Dean had been given time to appear. Further inquiries by the police, however, showed that Dean had left the country by air from Whenuapai at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. It is understood that a further warrant has been issued for his arrest on a charge of failing to appear when instructed.
