ROAD SEALING PROBLEM
Temporary Work In Innes Road
Although the works committee of the City Council expects complaints, it intends to proceed with temporary sealing In Innes , road (from Philpotts to Mahars roads) and in Mahars road.
“These roads are lightly constructed and sealed and have potholed badly for some time.’’ the committee reported to the council last evening. “Work on them has been kept to a minimum over recent months, notice having been received from the Christchurch Drainage Board of its intention to install sewers. The board, however, has had difficulty in letting a contract for this work and it now seems certain that the sewers will not be laid until after the winter.
"The roads have reached the stage where they cannot be kept in even reasonably passable order over winter without some major resurfacing work. The cheapest method of dealing with the roads would be to scarify the surface with stabilised top course and seal. The length concerned is 33 chains and the cost estimated at about £1000.’" the report said. "If the work is put in hand the council may be subject to criticism for laying a road which will be cut up down the middle within a year, but if the work is not done the road will be in a shocking condition over winter. In the circumstances the committee recommends that resurfacing be put in hand,” said the report.
