BLASTING AT LYTTELTON
Resident Complains
To Council
A complaint that the foundations of his house in Day’s road had been damaged by rock blasting in the port was made in a letter by Mr B. Snippe to the Lyttelton Borough Council. Mr Snippe said that movement of his house caused by the vibrations of the blast could be both heard and felt.
On receipt of the letter, said the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs), at a meeting of the council, last evening, he had instructed the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) to send a copy to the Lyttelton Harbour Board. ,
The Mayor’s action was approved. The council received a letter from Mr C. C. Manson complaining of the spread of gorse and broom on the old Charteris BayPurau road adjoining his property at Diamond Harbour.
The council decided to notify the tenant of the property to clear the gorse and broom. The alleged insanitary state of the conveniences at the beach and at the jetty at Diamond Harbour was the subject of a letter from the Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association. The association asked that councillors meet its president (Mr C. Paine) at Diamond Harbour to inspect the proposed sites and discuss proposals for improvements.
The Borough Inspector (Mr H. G. Ablett) said he considered that the conveniences at the beach should be placed in a more accessible position. He recommended that conveniences be built on a section close to the beach, and that the two conveniences in the domain should be rebuilt. The council decided to meet the president of the association as requested. The council made grants of £2O to the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club and £4O to the Lyttelton Marine Band.
