Chile’s View On Antarctic Plan
(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, February 15. Britain’s project to internationalise and demilitarise the Antarctic would meet opposition from Chile, the “New York Times” said today. In a dispatch from Santiago, the newspaper said that the general feeling was that any attempt to achieve international control, with or without the United Nations, would be acceptable if limited to icepacks or regions where sovereign rights had not been established.
Chile last year successfully opposed India’s efforts to submit Antarctic affairs to the United Nations. It was believed that the same action would follow with Britain’s new plan. The proposal was being submitted to the United States and other nations with claims staked in the Antarctic, the dispatch said.
