Action In East Algeria
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) ALGIERS, Feb. 16. French military security forces killed 141 insurgents in a battle with a band of 300 men near Duvivier, about 30 miles south of Bone, Eastern Algeria. The French lost 11 killed and 42 wounded, according to earlier reports. Troops captured machine-guns, rifles and ammunition.
There had been conflicting reports that French troops and tanks were massing along the Tunisian border, but a French spokesman said troop movements had been planned more than a week ago, and the numbers were not larger than usual. French sources reported that army posts in Tunisia were blockaded for nearly a week by armed Tunisians, but had adequate food supplies for the present. Isolated French posts have been supplied by helicopter without incident. A French Embassy official said in Tunis last night that 438 French civilians had been expelled from their homes in border areas.
