MR DULLES TO CUT HOLIDAY
Effort To Avert “Show-Down”
(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 16.
The Secretary of State (Mr Dulles) will cut short his Atlantic City holiday on Monday and take personal charge of United States efforts to avert an embarrassing United Nations Security Council show-down on the French-Tunisian dispute. Mr Dulles told the State Department of his decision today, in spite of signs that France and Tunisia were controlling their tempers. Yesterday the department said that Mr Dulles was considering interrupting his holiday. President Eisenhower, who also is on a holiday, was being kept fully informed of developments, officials said. The possibility of Presidential messages to both sides in the dispute was not ruled out.
Officials were encouraged by press reports from Paris that the French Government had decided to accept the good offices of the United States to mediate in the crisis.
