GOLD ON WEST COAST

Find May 'Be In Taipo Valley (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, February 16. Inquiries at Greymouth suggest that the possible rich gold strike hinted at by the Minister of Marine (Mr Fox) at Nelson, could be in the Taipo Valley, in the Hills to the south of Jacksons on the Otira road. Gold claims still exist in the Taipo Valley and in recent weeks heavy drilling machinery, motors and other material were dropped by parachute far up the valley. The air drop was carried out by a chartered aeroplane flown by an Air Force pilot. • Far up the valley a ground party waited for the equipment and was joined later by others. Speculation which followed the air lift into the Taipo dealt mainly with possible location of radioactive minerals which in recent history have replaced gold as the element sought on the West Coast. The Inspector of Mines (Mr L. S. Jones) has visited the lower Taipo recently and knows that prospecting is under way in the valley, but he said he had no knowledge of any major find in the area. Cossey, did not have to wait long before he was given his—“ Dad.” His wife gave birth to on Saturday afternoon.—(PA..)
