MAN JUMPS FROM STEAMER EXPRESS
Harbour Rescue By Constable (New Zealand Preu Association) W ELT ,TN GTON, February 14. A passenger in the inter-island steamer express, Maori, was rescued from Wellington Harbour by Constable L. Maloney and taken to the Wellington Hospital for treatment this morning after the man, fully dressed, leapt over the starboard side of the Maori into the water. Passengers were disembarking at the time. The alarm was given at the wharf police station and Constable Maloney ran to the edge of the wharf and threw a safety line to the man who ignored the line on the two occasions. The constable took off his booty and tunic and leapt into the harbour.
The man struggled violently and two members of the ship’s crew, a steward, Mr J. F. Furlong, and assistant purser, Mr L. R. Palmer, and a passenger, Mr G. C. Young, cast oft some of their clothing and jumped into the water to help Constable Maloney.
