Cook Strait Power Cable
Sir, —I would be greatly pleased if our learned and far-sighted Labour Ministers brought about their proposed abandonment of the Cook Strait power cable. The area of flat, well-drained, semidesert country lying between Pukeuri and the Waitaki river is definitely the logical and most suitable site (of the whole country) for industries. It is blessed with a mild climate and is at present served with a good railway, roads, and airport, close to the source of power. Oamaru harbour could be enlarged and improved to meet increased shipping demands, and possibly an express service to Wellington (similar to the present Lyttelton-Wellington service) would be a great inter-island boon. The power loss (through transmission) to the North Island would be colossal, so let industry move south w 4 here it Is assured of power.—Yourjs, etc., SPARKS. Gust. February 14. 1958,
