Immigration
Sir,—A point in Ralph S. Wheeler’s letter is worth enlarging on. He mentions a model for immigrants. Yes, that would be a necessity. Our God of Nations needs New Zealanders. Would He like the “English city. Christchurch." or the “Scotch, Dunedin” without the Irish having one too. Germans may hide under an old English name, cherishing the German oak in their gardens. The Jews look openly towards Palestine. The new settlers form into Dutch communities or Greek ones, the latter not bothering much to learn English. The new Hungarian immigrants brought their hatred towards Russians into this country which should become a centre of goodwill, a link between East and West and a democracy in which those who are highest, serve best. —Yours, etc., February 15, 1958. S.
