Obituary MR W. H. E. Flint

A prominent figure in the frozen meat exporting trade of New Zealand for more than 25 years, Mr W. H. E. Flint, chairman of the board of directors of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., died in Christchurch on Saturday morning. He was 79.

Born in England, Mr Flint first worked for the Irish Mail Steam Packet Company, but later transferred to the meat <• importing business, joining the firm of Thomas Borthwick and Sons. Ltd. His wide experience of the SmithI field markets in London as a comparatively young man was recognised by the British Government, which sent him to the United States during World War I to buy meat.

Mr Flint came to New Zealand in 1921 as the New Zealand manager of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., and later became a director. In 1931 he retired and returned to Britain for a year before returning to New Zealand to settle down. He became chairman of directors of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., during the Period of the company’s reorganisation and held that appointment until his death. He was also a director of New Zealand NewsPapers, Ltd., having been a member of the board of the company for 20 years, and at various times Was a director of a number of companies, including Hay’s, Ltd., and Aulsebrook and Company, Ltd. Social Work Mr Flint headed the Mayor’s Metropolitan Relief Fund during the depression years, and his seivices to the community were pub"Ucly acknowledged by the then Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan. He was frequently associated with community work, but being a very retiring nature kept well in the background. Mr Flint is survived by his widow, a daughter, Dr. Elizabeth flint, and a son Mr J. Flint, of Sydney.
