NEW BRIGHTON TROTS

Frocking Suited To Weather. The New Brighton Trotting Club can always be depended upon to provide the best possible amenities for the public and an attractive programme of racing, but from there on much depends on the weather for a really successful day. Many of the regular women patrons must have hesitated on Saturday morning to attend the club’s autumn meeting because the skies were heavy and grey. But by the time the New Brighton Cup was run the crowd had swelled, and many of the latecomers were women. The threatening weather can also be blamed for uninspired dressing. Visitors had no option but to be prepared for rain and leave their summer clothes at home. Nevertheless, there were some very pretty lightweight felts worn with tailored suits and many gailycoloured raincoats on the racecourse. For Floral Week The club had not forgotten it was floral week, and in honour of: the occasion had decorated vantage points around the members’ stand and the tearooms with attractive flowering pot plants. Even the bedding plants in the birdcage had been coaxed along with even more care than usual to give a show of flowers. Many visitors remarked on the fine cornet solos presented in Derry’s Band’s programme. These were given by Mr Graham Aldridge, a son of the conductor (Mr V. A. G. Aldridge). .Mr Graham Aldridge’s twin brother, Mr Barry Aldridge, is first trombonist in the same band.

The New Brighton Cup was presented to Mr G. G. Condon, owner of East Dome, by Mrs W. E. Desmond, wife of the president. ‘ Mrs Desmond wore a frock of Dior blue made with panels of pleats on the skirt and worn with a matching off-the-face hat and a squirrel cape. Mrs Desmond entertained the following guests in the women’s box on the stewards’ stand:— Mesdames A. McDonald, C. S. Thomas, F.. W. White, M. W. Mills. L. R. Dunster, J. C. Walsh. G. J. Francis, H. T. Fuller. H. J. Hewson, C. E. Hoy, J. Rowley, O. Hutchinson and A. J. Nicoll.
