HOWDY HAS EASY WIN IN HURDLES

Howdy, a consistent Hello Peter gelding from T. W. Reilly’s Orari stable, led for the last two and a half furlongs for an easy win in the Warrington Hurdles, fdr which he was fourth favourite at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. This was Howdy’s third win this season for Mr A. L. H. Barsdell. He raced twice at the Dunedin summer meeting in December for a third and a fourth. Howdy was in a trailing position alongside Column and behind Allan and Our Colin at the end of half a mile. He was still trailing when Allan fell on landing over the second to last hurdle near the three furlongs, and quickly ran past Our Colin coming to the straight. He was unchallenged in the straight, beating Our Colin by four lengths and a half. Artful King was a moderate third, two lengths behind Our Colin. Some Bounder misjudged the hurdle at the three furlongs and fell heavily. The start was delayed for 15 minutes when Gay King’s rider. J. D. Pankhurst, was kicked at the barrier by Miss Step. D. M. Te Au replaced Pankhurst. Narrow Win Salonica carried top weight of 9*l to a narrow win in a spectacular finish for the Mornington Handicap, the first leg of the on-course double. This four-year-old Cassock gelding was one of the .best beginners, and dropped into a trailing position going to the half-mile. He was close behind Royal Dasher, Dress Suit, and Sabin on the home turn and ran the race out solidly to beat Brianbra by a head. Brianbra % just caught the long shot. Treasure Shiel. which found room on the inner to challenge in the straight. Brianbra was in the second line when they lumped out. but could not hold his position. He galloped much more strongly when brought wider out on the track in the straight, and kept up his run though under a hard ride from outside the furlong. There was merit in Treasure Shiel’s third. She was one of the slowest beginners. Royal Dasher, which ran up close to the leaders earning to the straight, was half a length back, fourth, just beating Glenbridge and Sabin. Consistent Runner Distant Day, the runner-up in his three previous races, was much tpo good for the others in the Trial Handicap. Mr R. C. Idiehs’s three-year-old Someo gelding followed Shadrach, Royal Chant, and Central King into the straight, ran past the leaders quickly outside the furlong, and drew out to win by three and a half, leisurely lengths.

Central King, the favourite, was unchallenged for second. He was

quickly in a trailing position, and stayed there to the home turn. He was no match for Distant Day in the straight, but finished two lengths and a half ahead of the littlefaneled Gay Romeo. A fast finisher wide out. Gay Romeo passed seven horses in the last half a mile for his placing. He was four lengths and a half clear of the Riccarton-trained Search Warrant, which could not quicken pace after being close to the lead alongside Central King to the three furlongs. Search Warrant beat Royal Chant by a neck for fourth. Kelton was an improver’s sixth, close at hand, just ahead of Sports Date. Lexiana was next in a gap. Great Sensation showed ability to get up for third a length and a half ahead of Amenity. King Cassock was half a head back fifth. Then there was half a length to Prince Ermine, a length to Arc Flight, and half a length to Mitre Peak. Brazier was one of the slowest beginners, and made no showing after, finishing eleventh. Won Comfortably Racing clear with half a mile to run, Porcelain Prince was not afterwards headed in the President's Handicap, winning comfortably by four lengths. Baby Toes was . first out and at the mile El Jefe had taken over. With six to run Meteorologist raced clear, with Baby Toes. Down Under. Bright Bridge. Rex Robe, Wardroom and El Jefe in close order. Porcelain Prince moved up smartly down the back to be clear at the half-mile, with Meteorologist ahead of Bright Bridge, Down Under. Baby Toes and Meridian, with Wardroom, El Jefe and McCool heading the others At this stage Neptune’s Pride began to make up ground from the rear. Porcelain Prince carried on to be three lengths clear into the straight, and over the last stages was not in any danger, winning by four lengths and a half. Tarbillon came home solidly for second with McCool finishing on for third, a nose back. Silver Spring finished with a great run from the back to be a head away fourth, with Neptune’s Pride another head back fifth, and Meteorologist right up in sixth place. Bright Bridge was next, ahead of Paper Clip, El Jefe, and Meridian.
