RESIGNATION OF CHANCELLOR
M.P.’s Called Home For Debate
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. The Conservative Government today summoned home Parliamentary supporters now overseas on holiday for a critical debate caused by the recent walk-out of Treasury chiefs. The debate, on Thursday, will highlight Parliament’s first week in action after its reassembly tomorrow following a month’s Christmas recess. The Government stands in no danger from any Labour Opposition move, including possibly a motion of censure against Cabinet handling of economic policy, but it. wants to ensure a big vote. Politicians are eager to inquire into the full reasons for the Cabinet split in which the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Peter Thorneycroft, and his two Chief Treasury assistants resigned. Labour leaders will meet tomorrow. If the Opposition directly challenges Government economic policy in the debate, the actingPrime Minister, Mr R. A. Butler, will ask for a vote of confidence.
