COMPLAINT BY JORDAN
Security Council To Meet (Rec. 10‘ NEW YORK, January 20. The United Nations Security Council would meet on Wednesday on Jordan’s complaint that Israel had violated the Jerusalem co-man’s-land by planting trees in the area, it was announced tonight. Dr. Yusuf Baikal, Jordan’s permanent representative, asked for the meeting. At previous sessions • last year, Jordan demanded an end of “unlawful penetration” by Israel, and asked for the restoration of the original status of the area.
The United States is understood to be working on a resolution to deal with the situation. Informed sources said the United States resolution would go beyond the question whether oi not Israeli authorities had carried out, or were entitled to carry out, afforestation in the area, and would try to strengthen the hand of the -United Nations .Truce Supervisory ’ Organisation in its efforts to maintain peace. The council session will provide the first opportunity for the three new members—Japan. Canada and Panama—to take their seats. All three were elected at the last General Assembly, succeeding the Philippines, Australia and Cuba.
Dr. Koto Matsudaira will represent Japan and Mr Charles Ritchie, Canada, in the council, the most powerful organ of the United Nations.
