London Scottish Regiment
Sir,—News of former members of this xegiment now resident in New Zealand arouses interest in the history of the London Scottish —the first territorial regiment in action along with the Old Contemptibles in 1914. They were raised in 1859 from among Scotsmen in London, and designated the 15th Middlesex (London Scottish) Rifle Volunteers. In 1908 it became 14th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment, (London Scottish); in 1922, 14th London Regiment (London Scottish); in 1937, The London Scottish, the Gordon Highlanders; and in 1950, Ist Battalion The London Scottish, The Gordon Highlanders. London has only one Regular Infantry regiment, the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). All other London regiments were territorials, but in 1937, the London Scottish, like all other territorials, were distributed among a number of regular corps—hence the London Scottish, the Gordon Highlanders —the regiment of which the Queen Mother is Col-onel-in-Chief.—Yours, etc., MEREBIMUR. January 18, 1958.
