Seeded Players Win (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON N., January 21. Seeded players came through the first rounds of the national under 19 lawn tennis championships unbeaten in Palmerston North today. It is the first time for a number of years that no seeded players have been beaten in the first round. R. A. Wong (Auckland), seeded first and J. Souter (Wellington), seeded fifth, did not exert themselves to win their matches in straight sets. The second seeded J. Lockington (Auckland) was extended to beat L. Moir, of Poverty Bay, in three sets There were some surprise results in the under 17 championships. One of the seeded players. Miss L. Sarah (eighth), was beaten by E. F. Mahoney, of. Auckland, in straight sets. WOMEN’S RANKING MATCHES Only six matches for the Canter* bury women’s lawn tennis ranking ladder were played last evening because several players are on holiday and some are competing at the New Zealand junior championships at Palmerston North. The number taking part before Christmas was 26 and it is expected that this number will be playing again next week Results were:— Miss J. Davidson beat Miss L Luxton. 8-6, 7-5; Miss M. Mollisen beat Miss A. Snow, 6-2, 6-4; Miss J Patterson beat Miss C. Parris, 6-1, 6-4; Miss W. Wall beat Miss A. Bareham, 7-5. 6-4; Miss D. Morel beat Miss S. Murray, 6-1, 6-2; Miss K. Mike Green, today entered the quarter-finals of the Australian tennis championships only after a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Rod Laver (Queensland) in their second round match. Green will next meet the defending champion. Ashley Cooper. Cooper swamped his 19-year-old opponent, John Pearce, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 with a fine display of big hitting m their second round match. Cooper served so well that Pearce had no chance of breaking through.
