Most of the gallops were held on toe course primer, which had the trestles out about 40 feet. Both the course proper and the plough were in • lightning state, but no exceptional times were recorded. One of the best trials was that of Watch imd Walt (R. B. Taggart) and Demand (J. Beck), respec-tivetop-weights for the legs ofthe double on Saturday. They started from the mile, but travelled at little more than half-pace until the half-mile, where the speed was increased. They came from there in SOsec, and finished on terms after recording 37 3-Ssec for the last three furtongs. Ohe of the earliest to work was the Swannanoa Hack Handicap candidate, Amenity. The Sun King mare went easily over the first furtong. but quickened the pace in the record 41sec for the last three, although she was never at top. The stablemates. Devilry (W. McGregor) and Archway (N. T. Cowles) came home from the half-mile in 51sec. with Devilry, the stronger finisher, being three-quarters of a length clrer st the post. They will form a krecket 1® the Swannanoa Hade Handicap. Keep Time (M. V. Coon) completed a similar task in SSsec. He was not asked to do his best at any stage of the trial, and looks to be in good order to contest the North Canterbury Handicap. Ballormia (G. Baldwin) and Glare (A. H. Eastwood) were companions over half a mile in S2sec. Ballormia is a form top-weight for the Haldon Handicap on Saturday. Glare, a three-year-old half-sister by Cassock to Helm, is a member of C. G. Humphries* team. On Terms Lucky Time (J. Beck) and Shame (R. E. Johnstone) were on terms at the end of their six-furlong trial, the final half-mile in SO 2-Ssec. Both worked keenly throughout and should be fit candidates for their engagements at Rangiora. Golden Ribbon (J. M. Dempsey) had a length advantage over her stablemate. Rathfarham (L. McGuire) at the end of half a mile in 50 3-ssec. They are rival candidates for the Ashley Maiden Stakes on Saturday. but one scratching is required before Golden Ribbon can take her place in the field. Neptune’s Pride (R. E. Johnstone) and Bagman (N. T. Cowles) finished together, clear of Money-go-Round (G..G. Hampton) at the end of their mile trial in Imin 45sec, the last halfmile In SI 4-ssec. The pace was solid throughout and they were together to the straight, where Money-go-Round was eased. Stablemates’ Trial The stablemates. Pack Drill (J. M. Dempsey) and Panda (G. W. Mein) kept together throughout their six furlong trial, the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. Lammas (J. Beck) had a neck advantage over Balance (R. E. Johnstone) after a solidly-run six furlongs on the plough. They recorded Imin 15 2-ssec for the distance and 37 2-ssec for the last three furlongs. Lucky Sal (D. J. Thistoll) worked alone from the half-mile in 52 2-ssec. The Lucky Bag mare, which returned to her best form on the recent West Coast circuit, win have bright prospects in the Ronald Macdonald Handicap, Lightning Boy (R. J. Blair) was partnered by Robes (M. D. Alexander) in a trial over six furlongs. The pace was on throughout, and they finished on terms after recording 80 3-ssec for the last half-mile, the second fastest time of the mqgning.
