FRENCH RULE IN ALGERIA
Call For Joint Border Force
• N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS, Jan. 20. The French Catholic Popular Republican Movement (M.R.P.), last night called for a joint French and Tunisian force to patrol the Algerian-Tunisian border and prevent incidents.
It also urged a political approach to solve the Algerian problem. The M.R.P. executive committee passed two motions. The first said: “French-Tunisian friendship is unreconcilable in the framework of transformation of part of the Tunisian territory into a base for aggression against French territory. “But France must take the initiative in proposing the creation of a mixed French-Tunisian force for a permanent surveillance of the borders.” The second motion said that military achievements in Algeria did not alter the fundamental issue of the Algerian problem. “They cannot entertain the illusion of a purely military solution or serve a policy of wait and see.
“A political approach of which the new Algerian Home Rule Bill is but one of the elements, .must be made to solve the Algerian problem,” it said.
