N.Z. DASH TO POLE
No Criticism By Dr. Fuchs
(New Zealand Press Association)
SOUTH POLE, January 20.
No criticism of Sir Edmund Hillary’s actions was made by Dr. Vivian Fuchs at his press conference this afternoon. Dr. Fuchs said in answer to questions that he was “perfectly happy” about Hillary’s run to the Pole. Once he had laid the depots required, he was free to do this if he wished.
If there had been press opinion that Sir Edmund Hillary’s dash had jeopardised the chances of the traverse party, this opinion could have been only on the score that the fuel used could otherwise have been placed in a depot, said Dr. Fuchs. However, fuel had been subsequently delivered to depot 700 by air, and this seemed to end the matter.
