ATOMIC POWER FOR PEACE
Small Countries’ Contribution (New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. Small countries could make important contributions to the development of atomic power for peace, said Professor J. P. Baxter, one of Australia’s leading nuclear scientists, who arrived in Auckland by air last night to study the development of nuclear science in New Zealand. Australia had spent £6,000,000 on the atomic station near Sydney. and he considered the money was well spent, said Professor Baxter Professor Baxter is Vice-Chan-cellor of the New South Wales University of Technology and chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. He is accompanied by Sir Leslie Martin, professor of physics at the University of Melbourne and an adviser on defence to the Commonwealth Government. They will confer with the Government, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the University of New Zealand. After inspecting Wairakei to see the geothermal steam developments. the scientists will visit all universities and Government laboratories.
