THEFT FROM SHOP AT RANGIORA
£3O In Sovereigns Stolen About £3O in sovereigns was Stolen from the premises of John Johnston. Ltd., hardware merchants, High street, Rangiora. during the week-end. A strongroom door was blown open, a small safe removed and an attempt made to open two larger safes. A wheelbarrow from the shop’s stock was evidently used to remove the small safe. Apparently the thieves forced open gates leading to the rear of the shop, climbed a fire escape and entered through a first floor window. Two other doors leading to the office were also forced ©pen. When the robbery was discovered at 8 a.m vesterday a coil of rope and a cushion were found on a stool, possibly used to smother the sound of the explosion. An attempt appeared to have been made to force an entry through a rear door in the SelfHelp Co-operative Ltd., on the Victoria street frontage of the same building. Investigations are being made by 1. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson of the Christchurch CXD.
