INDUSTRY AT DARFIELD
Residents Asked To Make Survey The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association will recommend to the Darfield Residents’ Association that the residents should make a survey of what employees would be available should a light industry be established in that district The residents* association had written to the Manufacturers’ Association drawing attention to “the prospects of Darfield gaining the establishment of some class of light industry in the near future.” The letter, which was received by the council of the Manufacturers’ Association at its meeting last evening, said that Darfield had no existing light industry and it was necessary for young persons to go further afield to find jobs. “The present population of Darfield township is approximately 500 and is considerably greater over a five-mile radius,” said the letter. “There is a secondary school here and train and bus®s provide daily transport to and from this township.” Mr A H. Govan recommended that the residents’ association should be asked to make a survey of numbers available for an industry in Darfield. An earlier survey, seven or eight years ago. had shown that very few persons were offering.
