CARGO FOR SCOTT BASE
Endeavour Finishes
Unloading
(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 9.
H.M.N.Z|S. Endeavour had completed unloading supplies for the I.G.Y. party and for Scott Base in McMurdo Sound, said a signal received at Navy Headquarters, Wellington, today from the Endeavour’s captain (Captain H. Kirkwood, R.N.).
When the ship left New Zealand in December, she had aboard 250 tons of cargo. The American supply ship John R. Towle also carried south 120 tons of New Zealand cargo.
All these supplies were unloaded from the two ships by the Endeavour’s crew and taken to Scott Base within 10 days of arrival at McMurdo. For the first four days, the cargo had to be transported on sledges over seven miles of ice to the base. The ship was then able to move closer in, and for the remaining six days the sledges had to be towed only four miles to the base.
The Naval Board sent the following message to Captain Kirkwood: “The board has noted with pleasure the expedition’s transport and discharge of this season’s cargo, and it is most gratifying that the Royal New Zealand Navy’s part of the enterprise continues according to plan.” ’
