THE FLOOD-BROKEN RAILWAY LINE TO THE WEST COAST.—The white dotted line in this aerial photograph shows the nine-chain gap in the railway line between Otira and the West Coast entrance to the tunnel. In the left foreground are some of the many machines which are being used to scoop shingle from the river-bed (right) to rebuild the washed-out embankment. The river, now restored to normal, is flowing round the right end of the flood-damaged traffic bridge showing in the distance. In the upper left of the picture is a big shingle slip.
