MANANUI RUNS WELL IN TRIAL OVER MILE

The Wellington Cup candidate, Mananui, was one of few horses tested over a distance in training on the inside of the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by A. J. Stokes, he started from the mile and a quarter at three-quarter pace, ran home from the mile in Imin 48sec, and the final three furlongs strongly in 37 2-ssec.

G. H. Murfltt Jun. will take Mananui north with Broken Wings and Innesfell next Tuesday. Mananui was rather disappointing at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's .meeting but has obviously benefited from his two races there.

Innesfell (J. L. Coulter) ran from the mile in Imin 52 2-ssec, quickening to cover the last three furlongs in 38sec. Innesfell has had little luck at times in her racing this season and her record should look better before autumn racing is over. '

Broken Wings Broken Wings (B. W. McDonald) recorded Imin 54sec for his mile, 52 2-ssec for the last half-mile, and 39sec for the concluding three furlongs. He beat some smart hacks in the Stonyhurst. Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting and a - light holiday programme brought him to his best for a Trentham campaign. The stablemates, Waterfall (A. J. Stokes) and Tripped <W. Hanlin), dashed home from the halfmile on terms in 48 2-ssec.

Waterfall was a disappointing fourth at Washdyke, but her earlier form suggests that she wiU be a match for the best two-y,ar-old fillies sit the Wel-

lington Cup meeting. She was a winner at TYentham in October.

Post (E. G. Low) and Tarbillon (A. J. Stokes) were companions over six furlongs. Under restraint all the way, they recorded 54sec for the last halfmile.

Post was on the minimum of 8-2 when he won the Farewell Hack Handicap at Oamaru last week, yet he is a stone above the minimum in much stronger company in the Pancarrow Handicap on the first day at Trentham. His two wins—one was in a division ux a maiden race at Motukarara —have netted only £292 10s, but he is close to horses that have nearly cleared hack class. Cill-Dara (A. J. Stokes) led Pickard (D. J. Thistoll) over half a mile, run in 52 3-ssec. Cheyenne <W. Hanlin) and King’s Music (J. Beck) recorded <9 4-ssec for half a mile. Kaaeno's Trial Kaseno <B. Dodds) was going well a length ahead of Coin's Edge (N. Cowles) after running half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Kaseno is booked for a trip to Trentham. The Riccarton horsemen, M. D. Alexander and N. Cowles, will ride at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting this week-end.

Alexander will ride Happy and Keep Clear. Cowles has been engaged for Royal Glen, Grey Light, and Royal Trick. At Kumara, E. G. Low will ride members of C. J. Walsh’s team. A. J. Stokes will ride Lucky Sal, Stentor, and Winkles; R. J. Blair, Seascrape, Sumner, and Danger; J. L. Coulter, Air Bank. Fairy Whispers and Fickle Jade; and B. Dodds, Chellene and Coppowa.
