PASSIVE MAY NOT RACE AGAIN

Return To Owner

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, January 9. It is likely that Passive has run her last race. After contesting the Auckland Cup last week ahe developed severe filling in her offforeleg. and rather than run the risk of breaking her down, her trainers, F. Smith and G. W. Smith, have decided. to return her to her owner, Mr J. A. Mitchell, at Longbum. A four-year-old mare of great quality. Passive won £13365 last seasbn, which is a record for a three-year-old filly. Her successes Included the Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Avondale Guineas, the Desert Gold Stakes, the New Zealand Derby, New Zealand Oaks. Gloaming Stakes, Franklin Cup, and New Zealand St. Leger In the latter event she set a course record of 2min 56isec for a mile and threequarters at Trentham. At two years. Passive’s earnings amounted to £1695, the result of three wins and two thirds. In the Auckland Cup, which was her last start, she reached the peak of her handicap form with a courageous second, under 31b more than weight-for-age, to Red Eagle, which had 101 b lesa than the standard Mr* Mitchell bred Passive, and it is unlikely in any case that she would have been asked for much more- after the autumn racing. She is by Ruthless and the only foal which Mr Mitchell got from his very fine mare. Zenith, which died shortly afterwards.
